Recruitment

We compete on a national and regional basis for legal work from sophisticated clients who can go anywhere. The matters we handle are generally comparable to those at any of the “big” firms, although we also control our costs enough to be able to represent individuals in smaller matters.

We have most of the same staff and technological resources of the big firms with attorneys who know how to leverage those resources, so that we can handle the work in an aggressive, timely, and ultimately successful manner. But because almost all of our lawyers chose to come here from big firms, we strive to avoid many of the aggravations that come with big firm bureaucracy. We don’t pigeonhole lawyers into “practice groups” that dictate what they do, regardless of what they might be interested in. Our associates actually go to court and transaction closings on a regular basis – we’re all busy here, and the sooner our associates can handle arguments and high-pressure situations rather than just providing support, the better off we all are. We all work hard, but the “we” includes both partners and associates. All of our partners actively practice law; there isn’t any deadwood here.

We don’t intend to hire people, work them for a few years, and then lose them or shove them out. Every person we hire we hope to make partner. That means we’re very picky and we take recruiting and hiring very seriously. We’re always looking for additional talent, but we don’t grow just for growth’s sake.

Superior academic performance is a given for the attorneys we hire because the matters we handle are difficult and associates are required to resolve complex issues. Real world experience is valuable because we don’t hide associates for years while they learn – they are out there practicing. Judicial clerkships are also helpful because they provide litigation exposure and tend to develop strong writing skills.

Competitiveness is essential. Our clients often pay a lot of money for us to be tough-minded advocates, and that means fighting hard and winning. At the same time, we cherish integrity and playing by the rules. Clients and judges and even opposing parties must be able to rely upon our word and trust our deeds.

Most importantly – especially in a firm of our size – we require excellent judgment, a good personality, and an ability to work well with others.
